NEW ORLEANS -- An Uptown woman said she was accosted last month by a man driving a white pickup truck -- one that matches the description of the vehicle possibly used by the Baton Rouge serial killer, according to WDSU NewsChannel 6 reporter Richard Angelico.
Angelico interviewed the woman, who agreed to talk on camera in silhouette.
Angelico said the incident may have been an abduction attempt or merely a strange encounter, but it frightened the woman into reporting it to the Baton Rouge police.
Woman: This man comes up to me and asks, first, why am I bagging my groceries, and second, why I'm buying all this junk?
The encounter happened Aug. 17 at the Winn Dixie grocery store on Tchoupitoulas.
Woman: So he says, 'I'm gonna walk you to your car.' And I told him, 'No, I don't need any help, thank you.'
But as the woman left the store, she said the man followed her to the deserted parking lot.
Woman: He kept talking to me, and finally told me his name was Joe. He said, 'My name is Joe. I live in Pontchatoula. Can you guess what I do?' He had on work boots, dark blue jeans and a T-shirt.
And I looked at him and I said, 'I would guess that you're in construction.' And he said 'You're absolutely right.' And then he said, 'You're a big woman, and I could probably pick you up.'
He said, 'Do you want to go out with me tonight?' And I told him, 'No, I'm a very happily married woman.' And he said, 'Nobody ever wants to go out with me -- am I really that bad-looking?'
By this time, the woman said she was alarmed. She said the man was beginning to crowd her, moving closer.
Woman: He stepped forward to me again and acted as though he was going to reach toward me, and I stepped back and there was another man behind me and it scared me to death. But it was a man I had let in front of me in the grocery store coming to tell me thank you.
Then (the first man) said 'Well, I'm going to get you a present.' The Joe guy. And he went to his truck and got some vine he had torn off a tree and brought it back and gave it to me. And I threw it in the car and said, 'Thank you.'
I sat in my car until I saw him get in his, which was a white pickup truck.
After the incident, the woman called the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Woman: They were very interested in what he said to me, and in his reactions to me, and the fact that it was at a grocery store, and that he approached me in the store and then walked out. He didn't have any groceries, he had one gallon jug of water -- that was all he had. They were very interested and they talked to me for quite some time and then asked me to call their tip line.
The woman said a sketch of a man suspected in several attempted abductions bears a striking resemblance to the man who approached her. And then there is the truck.
Woman: It was an older truck. And (the description of the man and the description of the truck) fits.
The New Orleans Police Department is investigating the incident and has been in contact with police in Baton Rouge, Angelico said.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the truck is asked to call the tip line at (866) 389-3310.
