Task Force Looks At Murder Of LSU Student

Baton Rouge Police Halt Serial-Killer Briefings

UPDATED: 9:40 a.m. CST November 22, 2002

Detectives are looking into possible similarities between the January murder of an LSU student and the Baton Rouge serial killings, according to a police spokeswoman.

DesotoGeralyn Desoto, 21, was found stabbed and beaten January 14 in her home in the West Baton Rouge Parish town of Addis.

Police spokeswoman Cpl. Mary Ann Godawa said investigators are looking for -- but have not yet established -- a scientific link between Desoto's murder and the murders of Gina Green, Charlotte Murray Pace and Pam Kinamore.

"The task force is in communication with the investigating agency that is handling (Desoto's) case," Godawa said.

Still, there are circumstancial similarities, police said, including the manner of death, the fact that there was no forced entry and cell phones missing from Desoto and taken from Green and Pace.

Desoto's family members are pushing the police to tell the public more about her killing.

"Geralyn was butchered just like these other women," said Desoto's aunt, Jackie Robert. "Identical. I know in my heart that (police) know this is the serial killer."

Meanwhile, police on Thursday said they are discontinuing the twice-weekly briefings to discuss their hunt for the serial killer.

The updates started as daily briefings in August and dropped to twice a week as the investigation continued.

Godawa said investigators are not pulling back resources from the hunt for the serial killer. She said the briefings were taking time from the investigation and the task force had reached a point where there often wasn't much information they could release to the public.

Godawa said police have no suspects in the case. Police have connected the murders of three women to one man through DNA evidence. DNA samples have been taken from more than 600 men during the investigation.

Green was found strangled in her home Sept. 24, 2001. Pace was found stabbed to death May 31. Kinamore was abducted from her home July 12. Her throat was slit and her body was found about 30 miles from Baton Rouge.
