NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans Police are investigating the deaths of two pit bulls and the abuse of three other dogs found in a back yard. 
The two dead pit bulls were recently found attached to chains weighing more than 30 pounds each. The five dogs appeared to be fighting dogs. People who train dogs to fight often attach heavy chains to them because they think the extra weight will strengthen the animals, according to a spokeswoman for the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Animals.
The dogs were kept in an overgrown back yard with a makeshift fighting ring in the Irish Channel. Neighbors told police that dogfights took place there.
