Archbishop Denounces 'Southern Decadence' Celebration

The Archdiocese of New Orleans released a statement Tuesday denouncing activities that "glorify and exploit sexual excess," citing the annual "Southern Decadence" celebration in the French Quarter as one example.

"The commercialization of sexuality, both heterosexual and homosexual, does not promote respect for persons, family, or the common good," said the statement from Archbishop Alfred Hughes.

According to the official Web site, Southern Decadence "is the largest gay event in New Orleans. (This year) will be the 33rd annual celebration, with a street party that runs around-the-clock."

Religious organizations routinely campaign against the festival. Last year, a conservative Christian group paraded through the Quarter alongside the revelers, carrying signs and chanting anti-gay slogans. A heavier-than-usual police presence kept conflict to a minimum.

Festival organizer Rip Naquin said the event brings in thousands of visitors and adds tens of millions of dollars to the city's economy, but Hughes said it hurts the city's image.

"From yearly activities, such as Southern Decadence, to the tawdriness of of those establishments which place economic gain over the moral good, our city's image is hurt around the country," Hughes said.

The event will be held this year from Sept. 1 through Sept. 6.
