HOUMA, La. -- A former Houma police officer has been arrested and booked with possession of child pornography.

Attorney General Charles Foti said his Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force worked with Houma police on the investigation, which began with a complaint called in on Nov. 27.

Houma police were told that Michael Rains, a two-year veteran of the department, had downloaded pornographic images, some of children, from the Internet.

After being questioning, Rains turned over his home computer. Foti said investigators were called in to look at his hard drive.

A search warrant was obtained based on the original complaint, and a search revealed images of child pornography.

State investigators arrested Rains and booked him into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on one count of child pornography.

Rains resigned from the police department before the investigation was completed. He was released on bond Tuesday.
