NEW ORLEANS -- The Coast Guard responded Tuesday to the scene of an accident involving a cargo tanker in Westwego. The tanker Tsunami Valetta, which was outbound at about 11:15 a.m. with a load of crude oil, apparently hit a dock across the river from the Audubon Zoo at Louisiana Street and River Road, a Coast Guard spokeswoman said.A preliminary investigation found no one was injured and there was no spill of cargo. The dock, however, was destroyed.
The river remained open to traffic. The dock belonged to FT Services and served as storage for nonflammable substances, including molasses. The Westwego Fire Department said there was a minor leak of molasses into the river, but it was contained by a skim. There was another spill of molasses in the FT Services containment yard, where a pipe had broken loose.Westwego fire investigators said the tanker narrowly missed the Westwego water intake. As a precaution, they are sending a diver to inspect the structure. The 790-foot-long Tsunami Valetta is currently anchored at mile marker 102.
