JP Drainage System Put To Test
Some Streets Flood Despite Pumping Stations, Canals
KENNER, La. -- The heavy rains Tuesday and Wednesday are putting improvements to Jefferson Parish's drainage system to the test.
The Bonnabel Pumping Station, as well as others, kicked into high gear Tuesday, trying to drain tons of water dumped into the canals.
But even though the area hasn't seen this much water for a while, emergency management officials say that the system is holding up well.
Walter Maestri said Tuesday that the system could handle the 4-6 inches of rain that is forecast through mid-Wednesday. But he also warned of a wake-up call for what may be down the road.
The rain did cause some street flooding, and even though Jefferson Parish is confident the canal system can handle the water, a number of earthen dams designed to hold back water were breached.
