Street Flooding Hits Jefferson Parish
Rain From Allison Causes Lots Of Problems
Street flooding hit Jefferson Parish hard on Wednesday as rain from Tropical Storm Allison drenched the area.
Heavy Rain Brings Problems
Clearview Parkway in Elmwood was completely shut down for a period of time until state police finally allowed one lane of traffic to crawl through the floodwater.
Crews on Airline Park Boulevard had been installing new drainage pipes prior to the bad weather, but when the rain began they stopped working.
Rainwater then flooded the hole and washed away the soil underneath, worrying area residents.
"There's this crack there, and there is a four-foot section about ready to drop through," Daniel Reno, a neighbornood resident said.
He and other neighbors spent the afternoon trying to keep drivers off their street.
"The street can be repaired, but if someone loses their life, that cannot be repaired," Reno said.
Emergency management officials say that you should avoid driving your car through flooded streets if possible, especially if you do not know how deep the water is.
Officials say that if you must drive through, drive slowly as the wake from your vehicle can damage other people's property.
