Norco Tank Fire Extinguished

Combination Of Foam, Rain Help Put It Out

A fire at Norco that began when lightning struck a tank was extinguished around 3 a.m. Friday morning.

A combination of rain and spray foam helped put out the blaze.

Residents from New Sarpy to Norco were asked to close windows and turn off air conditioners until the fire at the Orion Refinery in St. Charles Parish was put out, officials said.

An evacuation was not necessary.

There were no reports of injuries, and all refinery personnel were accounted for, Orion spokeswoman Joy Patin said.

The fire, which broke out at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, burned in a tank that had a floating lid. Wednesday's high winds caused the lid to tip, letting liquid pool on top. Orion officials were meeting to discuss draining the tank, when a bolt of lightning hit it, igniting the gas on the lid.
